We will have our Unit 7 Assessment on Natural Resources on Wednesday.

New Multiplication Facts Grade

We are really starting to put an emphasis on students learning their math facts. Starting this week we will be taking a Fact Quiz on Friday. These will be similar to spelling tests and the grades will be averaged together for 1 daily grade. This week is the 8s. I will not be timing them, as in they have to race but I do not want them counting them on their fingers if at all possible. I want them to memorize them.
Please help your child practice and learn these facts as it will really help them with division.
On Friday they will need to know:
8 x 0 = 0
8 x 1 = 8
8 x 2 = 16
8 x 3 = 24
8 x 4 = 32
8 x 5 = 40
8 x 6 = 48
8 x 7 = 56
8 x 8 = 64
8 x 9 = 72
8 x 10 = 80
8 x 11 = 88
8 x 12 = 96
Next week will be the 7s from 0 to 12. If you have any questions please let me know.

November 5-9

MATH: This week we dive into division with up to 4 digit dividends by single digit divisors. We are learning how to use repeated subtraction and partial quotients to solve for the quotient. We used base 10 blocks to begin the process of creating equal groups. We learned about fact families and how to represent them with an array. We will continue to use partial quotients to determine quotients in our problem solving. We will look at having a left over (remainder) at times when we divide. We will learn how to interpret any remainders to determine how to answer the specific question. Sometimes we will need to ignore the remainder to answer the question. Sometimes we will need to add 1 to the quotient because we have a remainder. Other times we will only need to focus on the remainder to answer the specific question that is being asked. We will create a flip book with examples for interpreting the remainder. This week we are focusing on our Math Facts of 8s. 8 x 0 to 8 x 12.
SCIENCE: We will continue to explore mechanical energy through hands-on labs/experiments in class. We will be testing over mechanical energy on Friday. Next week we will explore sound energy, and then begin to explore electrical energy! Electrical energy is usually a favorite with the batteries, bulbs, and wires! :-)

September 10 - 14

What's Happening at DPES?

Math - We are continuing in Place Value. We are reviewing tenths and hundredths in expanded notation and in fraction form. We are also ordering and comparing numbers. Thursday and Friday of this week we will be putting these numbers in order on a number line.
Please remember to practice the multiplication facts with your child every night.
I will be out and have a sub in the afternoon on Wednesday September 12, 2018. I have let the students know as well.
Science - We are going over Physical Properties and ways to measure mass, volume, temperature, and density. We will also be looking at the three State of Matter: Solids, Liquids, and Gases.

Watch Dogs

This is an innovative program with the goal to have these men spend at one day a year at the school to be an extra set of eyes and ears as a positive male role model. Sound interesting?

Please come to our Watch D.O.G.S. Kick off Tuesday, September 18th. More information in the Wednesday folder!

Picture Day

Individual pictures will be taken Friday, September 21st. Everyone will have their picture taken (this is for the yearbook). You must fill out the picture envelope and return it with payment if you would like to purchase the pictures.

Please return the envelope and payment by Thursday, September 20th.
