MATH: This week we dive into division with up to 4 digit dividends by single digit divisors. We are learning how to use repeated subtraction and partial quotients to solve for the quotient. We used base 10 blocks to begin the process of creating equal groups. We learned about fact families and how to represent them with an array. We will continue to use partial quotients to determine quotients in our problem solving. We will look at having a left over (remainder) at times when we divide. We will learn how to interpret any remainders to determine how to answer the specific question. Sometimes we will need to ignore the remainder to answer the question. Sometimes we will need to add 1 to the quotient because we have a remainder. Other times we will only need to focus on the remainder to answer the specific question that is being asked. We will create a flip book with examples for interpreting the remainder. This week we are focusing on our Math Facts of 8s. 8 x 0 to 8 x 12.

 

SCIENCE: We will continue to explore mechanical energy through hands-on labs/experiments in class. We will be testing over mechanical energy on Friday. Next week we will explore sound energy, and then begin to explore electrical energy! Electrical energy is usually a favorite with the batteries, bulbs, and wires! :-)

 

Math - We are continuing in Place Value. We are reviewing tenths and hundredths in expanded notation and in fraction form. We are also ordering and comparing numbers. Thursday and Friday of this week we will be putting these numbers in order on a number line.

 

Please remember to practice the multiplication facts with your child every night.

 

I will be out and have a sub in the afternoon on Wednesday September 12, 2018. I have let the students know as well.

 

Science - We are going over Physical Properties and ways to measure mass, volume, temperature, and density. We will also be looking at the three State of Matter: Solids, Liquids, and Gases.
