Week of 12-11-2017

This week, students will be doing a lot of reviewing of skills learned during the 2nd Nine Weeks of School. We are also doing report card testing. 
 
Below is a copy of events or dates that you should be aware of and take note of anything that needs to be brought to school. Thank you!
 

Date Change - Jingle Bell Jog - PTO Fun Run - Friday, December 15th

Due to the cold and wet weather, the date has changed to December 15th for the 1st Annual Jingle Bell Jog. Students will run during their Specials time. Information and pledge forms were sent out before Thanksgiving. Funds from the jog will go towards new playground equipment. Forms and pledges are due Friday, December 22nd.

 

Polar Express Day

Polar Express Day schedule is a follows: 
12/21 am - Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades
Students may wear their pajamas on their scheduled Polar Express Day. Please keep pajamas appropriate for school!

 

To celebrate the holiday season and the conclusion of our fall semester, parties are scheduled as follows: 
Friday, 12/22 - AM PreK/PPCD/Kinder-4th Grade

Tomball ISD is participating in the Speak Up national research project. Speak Up is a survey designed to help students, parents, educators, and community members share their ideas directly with schools and national policymakers. Reading - how to speak and write in complete sentences using sentence stems to retell a story. For example,

Jingle Bell Jog - Postponed for Dec. 15

Due to weather concerns, the PTO has decided to postpone our Jingle Bell Jog until Friday, December 15.  They have determined it will be too cold and wet to have a successful event for our students.  Please plan on coming to cheer us on next Friday, December 15 during your child's Specials time.

This week, we are learning ...
 
Reading: about retelling a story by talking about the characters, the setting, what happened first, next, and then last. We will also be learning about the problem and solution in stories. 
 
Writing: how writers  practice telling their stories to partners and then write their stories using a storytelling voice.  
 
HFW: can, no, & said
 
Word Family: -ad (bad, dad, fad, had, lad, mad, pad, rad, sad, Tad)
 
Math: how to compose and decompose numbers 0-10. Compose is to create a number. Decompose is to show different ways to make that same number. 
Example: 
Compose 6 (create the number six)
Decompose 6 (0 and 6 is 6, 1 and 5 is 6, 2 and 4 is 6, 3 and 3 is 6, 4 and 2 is 6, 5 and 1 is 6, 6 and 0 is 6)
 
Science: What makes objects move the way they do? What do I notice about objects in my environment? How do you use your senses to understand your world?
 
Social Studies: 
  • Why are family customs and traditions important?  How are the customs and traditions different among different cultures of people?

Come join us on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 for Family Literacy Night. There will be fun and games for children (literacy related)! It really does turn out to be a great time for kids and family!!

Tomorrow is Library Day!! Make sure your child has their library book in their backpack so that they may turn it in. Your child will get a new library book tomorrow so they can either read to you or be read to at home. I hope everyone has a wonderful evening!

Please consider donating CANNED goods to Ms. Ortiz's classroom! We are having a school wide contest to see which classroom can bring the most canned foods!! I am not sure what the prize is ... yet. I know it is easy to say this is a great time to clean out the pantry of unwanted items. However, please keep in mind that these canned foods will go to help other families in need that reside in our area. Please keep in mind that if your family does not like the food, would another family like it? Thank you for helping us practice the act of service during the holiday seasons! 

Please bring a BROWN paper grocery bag to school. We are seeking the ones from the check out line. Please bring these by Thursday, November 9, 2017. This will be for the Thanksgiving Feast NEXT Friday, November 17, 2017. Thank you

Thanksgiving Feast

Writing: how to make writing goals and working hard to reach them. We are also learning how to sound out vowel sounds for the middle of words.

Word Family: -an (ban, can, Dan, fan, Jan, man, pan, ran, tan, van)
 
Math: how to compose and decompose numbers 0-10. Compose is to create a number. Decompose is to show different ways to make that same number. 
Example:
